青 春
サミュエル ウルマン
青春とは人生の一時期のことではなく心のあり方のことだ。
若くあるためには、創造力・強い意志・情熱・勇気が必要であり、
安易（やすき）に就こうとする心を叱咤する冒険への希求がなければならない。
人間は年齢（とし）を重ねた時老いるのではない。
理想をなくした時老いるのである。
歳月は人間の皮膚に皺を刻むが情熱の消失は心に皺を作る。
悩みや疑い・不安や恐怖・失望、これらのものこそ若さを消滅させ、
雲ひとつない空のような心をだいなしにしてしまう元凶である。
六十歳になろうと十六歳であろうと人間は、
驚きへの憧憬・夜空に輝く星座の煌きにも似た事象や思想に対する敬愛・
何かに挑戦する心・子供のような探究心・人生の喜びとそれに対する興味を
変わらず胸に抱くことができる。
人間は信念とともに若くあり、疑念とともに老いる。
自信とともに若くあり、恐怖とともに老いる。
希望ある限り人間は若く、失望とともに老いるのである。
自然や神仏や他者から、
美しさや喜び・勇気や力などを感じ取ることができる限り、その人は若いのだ。
感性を失い、心が皮肉に被われ、嘆きや悲しみに閉ざされる時、
人間は真に老いるのである。
そのような人は神のあわれみを乞うしかない。

サミュエル ウルマン氏が80歳の記念に自費出版した
『 80歳の歳月の高見にて 』 に収められた 『 YOUTH ( 青春 ) 』。
この詩は第二次世界大戦後、アメリカの雑誌・リーダーズ ダイジェストに掲載され、
連合国総司令官を務めた ダグラス マッカーサー元帥が座右の銘として
執務室に掲げたことから、日本でも知られるようになったものです。
経済界の先頭に立つ人物の間では早くから有名で、
故・松下幸之助氏も座右の銘としていたと言われています。

YOUTH
Samuel Ullman
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a
matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter
of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the
emotions; itis the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity
of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often
exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty. Nobody
grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting
our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the
soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the
spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the
lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next,
and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart
and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives
messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and
from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows
of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old,
even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the
waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
